The Wallace Family

This is the information that I received from Nellie Carter in England.

Thomas, son of Richard Carter of Goathland was born on October 1st,1786. He married Mary Snowdon, daughter of a Goathland farmer. Mary was born in 1794 and died in 1847. She was buried in Goathland churchyard, where there are two tombstones, one to her and one to her daughter Mary. Mary was born in 1819 and had two children both died when they were babies.
After Thomas and Mary were married they lived at Boereton Farm, Goathland. They lived in an attractive stone built house that is still occupied.
Thomas, their son was born in this house on February 17th,1825. He came to Canada with his father and married Annie Madill.
About 1824 Thomas, Mary and their family moved to a farm and inn at Newdonale, about 5 miles south of here where a railway was being built.
John born in 1829 and Hannah born in 1831 were born at this house.
After the mother died in 1847 Thomas, the father, immigrated to Canada with his son Thomas and daughter Hannah.
T 4he eldest daughter, Jane born June 16th,1816 married Anthony Stanford. He was a Goathland farmer. They remained in England.
Hannah’s brother Thomas built a house about 1/4 mile west of Beokley where he lived with his wife Annie Madill. They had six children, three boys and three girls. Thomas died when he was seventy two.
His oldest son Robert born in 1861 travelled to Carmen, ManYThoamitoba. He stayed the following winter in Ontario and then returned to Manitoba and bought a farm at Bethany.
 
The following is the information Grandpa told me.
 
James Wallace was born in 1820. When James was thirteen years old he left his home in Scotland to become a sailor. He never returned to Scotland to live but did go back a number of times to visit. James sailed around the world five times. When he was sailing ships on the Great Lakes he bought some land at Hull, Ontario and made this his home. He had only lived there for about a year when  he became restless so he sold his land to his his Barbara. When she married she sold the land, the Eddie Match Company is now on that land. James bought land about eighteen miles fJohnm Owen Sound, Ontario after he left Hull.
In 1858 James Wallace married Hannah Carter from England. They were married in Ontario and lived about four miles west of Beokley, Ontario.
In 1860 James and Hannahs first son was born, they named him John. In 1862  m. James Wallace ) son was born, they named him Robert. James was born in 1865. In 1867 they had a daughter, she dies when she was an infant and was not named. Their last child was born in 1868, Bill. All the children were born in Ontario.
James, Hannah and their family came to Manitoba in 1887. They rented a house where Reuben Smith now lives.
John returned to Ontario in 1888 (this was my Great-Grandfather), he married Mary Gawley in 1890. They were married at Markdale, Ontario.
John and Mary came out to Manitoba. In 1887 James bought the farm at Golden Stream. They built a six room log house not quite a quarter of a mile from our house. They tore it down when they built the one that is there now. The one they built was a two storey brick house, top floor had five bedrooms and bathroom, main floor had kitchen, pantry, living-room and parlour. There is a staircase going up to second floor from the kitchen as well as one going from the front door, there is a stained glass window in the parlour.
Bob Wallace went out to Vancouver in 1890, he was a carpenter. Bob married Elizabeth Fraser at Vancouver. They had one son and one daughter, the boy was born in 1901 but not sure when the girl was born.
James Wallace farmed at Golden Stream like his brother John. He farmed where Earl Wallace now lives, about 1/4 mile from our farm. James was Earl’s father, he married Annie Bowles in 1915 and they had four sons and two daughters.
Bill (William) was a harness maker and lived in a number of towns in Manitoba but stayed at Arden the longest. Bill married Margaret Boyce in 1899. They had nine children, Fred, Jim, Dorothy, Ardith or Ordith, Nina, Gladys, Hazel, John and Orlo. Hazel was one and half and Orlo was three when they died from diptheria, Ardith was fifteen when she dies of appendix trouble.
John and Mary had one son and three daughters, Robert Malcolm, December 8th, 1892, Mabel, 1890, Minnie,1894, Grace,1896.
Minnie and Grace were both married in our farm house.
Robert married Mary Ellen Flegar on April 3rd,1919. They were married at Glendale, Manitoba.
Mary was born at Huffington, Ontario. When she was two years old her parents moved to Glendale, a few years later they moved to Springhill. Mary had six brothers and three sisters. Wesley (Edmonton), Archie (Neepawa), Edgar (Neepawa). Johnny died in 1913 and Angus died when he was one. Irvin (Birnie), Gladys (Port Alberni), Beth (Prince Albert) and Annie who died in 1953.
Rob and Mary moved to his parents farm and his parents moved to Gladstone. The Lenton’s live in the house now.
On April 9, 1920 Rob and Mary had a daughter, Lela Evelyn.
Lela married Francis Hillman on October 14th,1943, they were married at the farm.
Francis was born in Frethern, England. His parents came to Canada when he was fourteen years old and bought a farm about two miles east of our farm.
When Lela and Francis were married they bought a farm about a quarter mile east of his parents and built a house there.
Francis and Lela had four children, Donald Francis, September 18th, 1944, Bruce Harvey, January 28th, 1946, Verna Mae, August 16th, 1947 and Lenorad Ross, October 20th, 1953.
In 1965 Francis and Lela moved to Gladstone, Francis rented the land to his brother Gill. Francis got a job with the feed mill in Gladstone and they purchased a house there. The following year he got transferred to Brandon, a few months later he was transferred to Indian Head, Saskatchewan.
Their eldest son, Don, married my second cousin, Betty Duncan,  in 1965. Betty is from Katrime. They live at Minnedosa, Manitoba where Don is employed at the Co-Op. Their daughter Tanis Lee was born November 15th,1965.
Bruce married Marion Kirby on August 17th, 1968 at Meacham, Saskatchewan. They live in Calgary where Bruce is a carpenter and Marion teaches school.
Verna married Bill Davis on September 21st, 1968 at Indian Head, Saskatchewan. They also live in Calgary where Bill is with the City Police and Verna is employed with the Bank of Montreal.
Len is still attending school at Indian Head.
Mary and Rob’s first son was born November 12,1922, they named him Robert John after his father and grandfather.
In 1943 Bob was called to defend his country. Bob left Shilo on August 15 of that year, he served in the Theatre of War and was sent to Italy, Belgium, Holland and England. He was in the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, First Division, he brought injured men back from the front lines. He arrived back in Winnipeg on October 8th, 1945.
After Bob returned home he worked with his Dad on the family farm. He became engaged to Joyce Ellen Faye Reshaur on December 25th, 1948 and they were married September 20th, 1949.
Joyce was born on August 7th, 1931 to Gladys and Cliff Reshaur. She had three sisters and two brothers, Darlene Constance, Roland Thomas, Shirley Gladys, Betty-Lynn and Kenneth Morton.
Bob bought the farm from his parents in 1950, Rob and Mary then moved to Gladstone, Manitoba. They lived in an apartment for about a year before purchasing the house they now live in.
Bob and Joyce had four daughters and one son.
Norma Joyce was born on January 20, 1951, she has taken one year at the Brandon University and will be returning next year, she is studying for her teacher’s degree.
Nina Lynn was born December 4th, 1952.
Wilma Ellen was born March 24th, 1954.
Pearl Gladys was born September 7th, 1955.
Robert Clifford was born July 3rd, 1958. Nina and Wilma are attending William Morton Collegiate and Pearl and Robert are attending the Gladstone Elementary school.
Bob and Joyce still own and operate the farm but Joyce is employed at McDonalds Grocery Store and Bob works part time at Stout’s Garage.
Rob and Mary had twins on August 28th, 1924, a girl, Alma Ellen and a boy, Allan Edwin.
Allan married Darlene Reshaur on December 10th, 1949. Allan and Darlene bought a house in Gladstone, Manitoba and Allan worked as a butcher at Kennedy’s. From there they moved to Belmont, Manitoba. He worked at Royalite until 1968 when they moved to Brandon, Manitoba. Both of them are employed at the Brandon Vocational School there.
Allan and Darlene had two daughters, Beverly Anne was born October 5th, 1951. Bev. married Ken Storie on March 17th, 1969 at Brandon, Manitoba. They live in Brandon where Ken will be getting his B.A. next year.
Linda Darlene was born on June 24th, 1953. She attends school in Brandon.
Alma married Harold William John Lobban on March 23rd, 1946, they were married in the parlour on the farm. Harold was from Golden Stream, his parents farmed about two miles south of us.
After Alma and Harold married they moved to Arden, Manitoba where they owned a farm. A few years later they sold and bought a farm at Golden Stream. When they decided to quit farming and move to Gladstone the farm was sold to John Novak, his family still own and operate it. Harold had a number of jobs in Gladstone but his last was with the Co-Op. A few years later they moved to Neepawa, Manitoba. They bought a new home and Harold worked at Royalite then Co-Op and now works for Neepawa Creamery. In 1969 they sold their house and moved to the Neepawa Trailer Court.


Alma and Harold had a son, Walter Harold, born May 1st, 1948. Walter worked at Neepawa Creamery for three years, he is now working at a creamery in Calgary, Alberta.
Alma and Harold first daughter was born September 5th, 1950 and they named her Joan Faye. Joan is employed at Ray’s Drycleaning in Neepawa.
Alma and Harold last child was born on April 11th, 1954, they named her Ruth Marilyn. Ruth is attending high school in Neepawa.
Walter was born in Arden and Joan and Ruth  were born at Gladstone.
Mary and Robs last son was born on October 15th, 1932, Wendell Wesley. Wendell married Doreen Strong from Langruth on July 24th, 1965. They lived in Gladstone for a few months before moving to Neepawa and then about a year later to Erickson, Manitoba.
Wendell and Doreen have two sons, Glenn Scott, April 2nd, 1965 (either the wedding year is wrong or the birth year is wrong) .
Kevin Lyle was born  January 21st, 1970, Glenn was born in Neepawa and Kevin was born at Erickson.
