Chapter 4: The Empty Nest : Page 10 /  Village Drive / 2012

In June of 2012 we sold our mobile in Glendale and rented an apartment at 30 Village Drive, Unit 16-B.

The buildings are 8-plexes and we were happy to get a second floor unit facing North and East - the right hand corner.

Summer Travels 2012

It seemed that we had little time to get settled in, so many things were happening.

On June 22 we went to the Bryan Adams concert with Geoff and Jonah and stayed over at Geoff and Lindsay's.

The next night we camped at Shady Oaks with Bev's family. Linda and Ron, Pearl and Scott, Betty-Lynne and Geordie, Wayne and Cynthia and kids , Nick and Miranda and kids, Ashley, were all there.

Bev and I camped at Winnipeg Beach in the last week of June.

We made another camping trip to Winnipeg Beach.

Bev travelled to Winnipeg to accompany Betty Lynne who had a medical appoinment.

Jonah travelled with us to Onanole where we played mini-golf.  We came back by way of Sandy Lake and Rivers Campground where we played another round of mini gold.

Bev and I made a quick trip to Minnedosa for a swim. On the way back by we stopped to look at a few interesting houses on acreages along the Little Saskatchewan Valley at Riverdale and visited Rapid City.

Bew met Cynthia at Linda and Ron's farm to pick vegetables.

On August 28 Bev took Donna, Issac and Sophie to Minnedosa Beach.

On Sept. 9 we went to Pearl & Scott's where we toured an alpaca farm and celebrated Pearl's birthday.

Peace Gardens, Bottineau and Lake Metigoshe North Dakota - July 9. We had a bit of trouble at the border. It all started when our passports were misplaced during the move.  Not to worry - we were sure we'd come across them as we settled in. One fine Monday morning we decided  to go for a drive. We settled on the Peace Gardens as a destination and then decided that while we were so close we should check out a few places in North Dakota. Bev embarked on a mad scramble to find those passports and sure enough, as I was waiting by the door she shouted, "Found them" and a few minutes later we were on the road.

After a pleasant tour of the Peace Gardens, with a highlight being the Cacti Exhibit, we pulled out of the parking lot and into the short lineup at the US Border Crossing. It was then that Bev discovered that the passports she had been so happy to have uncovered were in fact our 1973 Passports.  We decided, "Well we might as well give it a try," and proceeded. We explained the situation to an amused Border Guard, who, expressed an interest in seeing what we would have looked like when we were "young and good looking" in 1973. He had a good laugh at the photos, exclaiming to me, "Hey you sure had hair!"  Then he took our driver's licences into the office and came back soon to tell us to proceed.  We seemed to have made his day - and left both him and us with a story to tell.

Lake Metigoshe, North Dakota

The Storie Family Reunion was at Oak Lake on the weekend of July 14.

We travelled to Winnipeg on July 17 with Jonah. Jonah, Geoff and Lindsay attended the Bomber game while we went for a good walk and some ice cream, then watched it at G&L's apartment. Stayed over and went to Gimli for lunch (Beach Boy pickerel - Jonah's request, and treat.) We came home by way of Stonewall with short detour to Stony Mountain.

On July 22 we took another day trip - this one confined within the Canadian borders. We ended up at Lake William for a swim, with stops at Ninga and Killarney along the way and Ken made a short visit to the Beckonning Hills Museum (while Bev looked for Ice Cream) in Boissevain one the way home.

A few days later went did another trip, this time westward to Virden by way of some historic churches and an interesting picnic park called Eternal Springs. All these were just north of the Assiniboine River between Oak Lake and Virden. We came home by way of Lenore and Rivers.

On Sat. Aug. 5 Jerry and I  hiked the Bald Hill and N.E.T. Trails along the North Escarpment Trail System in Riding Mountain National Park. It was a total of about 25km with some serious uphill. Ate pie, picked wild plums. Had super at the Hotel in Erickson on the way home.

Spent the night at the South Beach Casino Hotel over on the east side.

It was a good day for Kite Surfing
