Winnipeg 1969
When we were married I was
attending B.U. and Bev was working at Perth's. We rented an apartment
in the basement of the Dutch Mill Bakery, which was on the 1200 Block
on Rosser.
We bought suede jackets with our wedding money.
(Photo
taken
front door step at Mom & Dad Wallace's Riverview Apt). I
found work at Grayston's Hatchery after exams
and after a few months we moved to a basement apartment on 12th St.
(Figol's) in June.
I couldn't find steady work so we decided to
try our luck in Winnipeg. In July we stayed with Bev's Uncle
John and Aunt Shirley for a week or two while I found work at the
new Grant Park Woolco in the Men's Department. We found an apartment
right next door to the Grant Park Mall.
Before long Bev found work at the same Woolco.
Of
course we soon charged up some furniture and a stereo.
Our first Xmas tree in Wpg. I am (Bev)
wearing my Woolco smock & quite proud of it, ha! To no
one's surpise, I (Ken) wasn't really cut out for retail work, and
after being
politely "laid off", I went to work for Safeway. Far from
an
ideal
job, but work was work.
Our time in
Winnipeg
was short, and would likely have been a bit lonely if not for pretty
regular visits from friends and relatives, and although we socialized a
bit with people we met at work, we often kept to ourselves. For awhile
we were pretty happy with that, being still "newlyweds" and a bit
excited about life in the big city. It was fun taking the bus downtown
to shop etc.
Linda visiting us in Wpg.
I remember visiting
with
Ken
and Joyce Reshaur, with Gerry August, with Ruby Barr, and of course the
relatives.
Other
"city" life reminiscences include, having an FM Rock Radio station!
(And the new stereo to listen to.) Buying records at Opus 69! Spending
a bit of money on clothes!
Bev in
our Wpg. Apt. It was pretty exciting to have our own REAL apt.
in an apt. block, (3 story) complete with washers & dryers
just down the hallway.
We went "home" for
Christmas for a few days. I remember seeing
my old band play at the Price Eddy and going to a party at Jim Hayes's
house.
Our first Xmas, seated Grandpa & Grandma Reshaur, Betty-Lynn at
Gladstone. Mom & Dad, Ken & Bev. In January, again, to no one's
surprise, I was tired of
working for Safeway. It wasn't the actual work, it was the fact that I
was being sent here and there to fill in a various stores. I have fond
memories of the day I was told to get a haircut and decided, in the
middle of shift, that enough was enough.
The good part was when
the boss, somewhat huffily, informed me that quiting without notice
would look bad on my employment record. I believe I was a model of
restraint as I politely assured him that I thought I'd be OK.
Our first Xmas (at the
farm ) as
husband
&
wife!
Our 1st Anniversary, taken at Mom & Dad
Wallace's.
