2011  -  Chilkoot Trail Hike

Jerry and I drove the Alaska Highway to Whitehorse. While there we drove to Skagway / Dyea and hiked the Chilkoot Pass. On another day we took the White Pass Railway tour.

Trailhead, Dyea Alaska. Tuesday, July 5, 2011, about noon. Three young men, in the prime of life, at the height of their physical powers, set out to hike the Chilkoot Trail.

Or so I heard. But this is our story.

The weather was great. The first part of the trail took us uphill gently,  through forest...

..and over streams.

The first rest stop was at Canyon City -  we appear to be in good sprits.

The next day we approach the summit. Snow and  rocky streams are typical.

The snow was preferrable to the loose stones found on some parts of the summit area.

And on towards the summit - it wasn't just around the bend as we had hoped!

A short break.

Now we really are approaching the last big climb to the top.

Just before the top we encounter the strip of tumbled rocks called "The Scales"

A tough, slow climb. Tripping or stumbling would not be a good idea..

A look back at our morning's work.

Another look back at the final rocky stretch.

Still not there! A welcomed snow-covered section.

Two happy hikers at the summit with the Canadian Border and Warden Station in the centre background.

Downhill, past some nice lakes. Still a rocky trail with lots of creeks to cross, but did I mention...downhill!!!

Approaching Sheep Camp, the first campsite and rest stop on the Canadian side. We stopped for a late lunch.

This is how rivers start.

Still some snow patches, but generally greener terrain.

A more well-defined trail from Sheep Camp to Lindeman City.

It says that we're not done yet!

A nice set of falls on the creek we follow between Happy Camp and Lindeman City.

Taken near Lindeman City. We're happy, the hard part is definitely over.

The final trail into Bennett is quite different from what we've seen so far.

Approaching Bennett along Bennett Lake.

This artifact sits across from the train station at Bennett. (I refer to the boat ... )

The end of the trail is at Bennett. We will have a great lunch and take a relaxing train ride to Carcross where our vehicle is waiting.
