Chapter
4: The Empty Nest
: Page 9 / Glendale
In June of 2009, after house shopping for several weeks we
purchased a
mobile home on Glendale Bay. We didn't move until the end of July when
our lease in Gimli was up.
August
2009
What a busy month!
My band played at a Garden Party (Cancer Fundraiser) and at
Clancy's. We tried to get settled into our new place but had to take
time for an 8 day (Aug 19 - 26) road trip to Flin Flon and Swan River
where we worked on Heritage Inventories for Special Places projects.
Work, work, work. 10 hour days - but lots of interesting things to see
- and interesting people to meet. Bev went on her own road trip to
Regina with Linda and Pearl.
I continued my contract work on Heritage Projects and set up
a very
efficient and tastefully decorated home office.
We enjoyed watching the backyard rabbits
I also took on a contract as Heritage Coordinator for the
City of
Brandon. One of my duties was to attend a seminar in Selkirk put on by
Community Heritage Manitoba. Bev and I were also working on Special
Places Projects in Swan River, Flin Flon, Manitou, Hartney and The
Carberry / Glenboro.
We also took on a longer term contract
providing support and research for a proposed Virden Heritage
District.
Still, it seemed that all we did was party! This one
for Bev's
60th birthday.
A family gathering at Spruce Woods.
And another at Minnedosa
And a party - just because.
Jonah's 40th birthday was celebrated in style at Tim and
Debbie's.
Jonah had just arrived back from Vega where Jerry had trated him to a
very special Birthday excursion.
One of our many road trips - this one with Jonah, to Pinawa,
Grand
Beach and to Selkirk to see the Marine Museum of Manitoba.
A family gathering at Wanda's.
And another one at our place
Concert highlights
included Tom
Petty - the second time in a matter of just a few years.
I was asked to consult on a PBS
documentary - "Steamboats on the Red". They interviewed me at Portage,
but my information about the Assiniboine River steamboat era wasn't
used in the final cut. It was an interesting experience, we got a
free supper, and a DVD copy of the TV show that was produced.
Jonah, Geoff, Tim and I saw U2 at the stadium.
2010
January
Pearl,
Scott, Betty-Lynn, Geordie, Linda and Ron came for supper
on Jan. 2. On
Jan 1 Donna had a retirement/birthday party for
Dave.
February
We got good use out of the cross-country
ski trail we started out back.
March
We're finishing off projects in Virden
and
the Carberry area. Ken and Dave skied Panorama for
four days. While we
were away we missed Jerry's three
birthday parties. Mom was 86 this
month.
April
Bev accompanied Donna,
Isaac, & Sophia to the Winter Fair.
We had a family supper at Nick & Miranda's in Rivers on Apr 3rd.
Bev travelled to
Regina alone to visit Dad & Nina (Easter Sun. to Wed.)
We had a party for Geoff's birthday here. On Jonah's birthday we went
in to Winnipeg. A very early
spring. Lake Wpg. has open water already. Windy month, giant ice
formation at Wpg. Beach due to high winds on Apr 2 (Good Fri) drew
tourists.
May
We made trips to: Hartney, Melita,
Deloraine; Rivers; Wawanesa & Baldur to line up Heritage Inventory
Projects. Jonah took Bev to Chicken Delight for Mother's Day
lunch. We took Mom Storie. Tim & Jerry joined us too. Geoff
came out for Mother's Day & treated Bev to
supper at Double Happiness. We've enjoyed a few days with temps in
mid 20's. Trees
are in bud & blossom early, lilacs are early, very nice month until
May long. Then lots of cool temps, wind & rain.
June

Woods camping with
Bev's family.
We hosted a Photo Sharing Session in Virden, the purpose being to
gather and scan old photos that might be relevant to the Heritage
District Project we are working on.

We finally took our 40th Anniversary

Lots of road trips for work, including several guided tours in the
Baldur/Glenora area where a very active local committee is helping us
with our
Ken resigned from his City of Brandon Heritage Coordinator position to
allow more time for our other heritage projects. (And to allow for a
bit more goofing off.)
November
We wrapped up the Virden Heritage
District
Project with a presentation to the Virden Town Council. We got the
Hartney Special People Project underway. This is a pilot project one -
of a few that "new" ideas we'll be trying out in the next year.
December
Bev's family had their "Christmas" on Sat. Dec
11.
We spent a few days in Regina (Dec 17-20) where we visited Bev's dad
and Grant & Carol. We spent Christmas Eve at Geoff & Lyndsey's
and stopped at Linda & Ron's for supper on the way home.
Geoff
arrived about 1:30 Xmas

day. Picked up Jonah at 5 from
work. We ordred Pizza Hut, visited, opened presents, played a game. A
good time! Ken picked up Mom S at 7:45 Xmas a.m. so she could join us
